Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
In this article, we will
delve into all the details about the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, covering its
official specifications and more.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Overview:
200MP ISOCELL HP2 Sensor
After sticking to 108MP
sensors for a few years, and striving to perfect it, Samsung has now made the leap
to 200MP cameras with the S23 Ultra. The concept of a 200MP sensor is not
entirely new, as various phones featured it in 2022, and rumors about a 200MP
Samsung phone even surfaced in mid-2021.
Samsung subsequently
introduced additional 200MP sensors, namely the ISOCELL HP3 and HPX, catering
to more budget-friendly phones. The latter is specifically reserved for Chinese
phones like the Note 12 series.
The surge in 200MP camera
smartphones can also be attributed to chipset manufacturers, as the new
flagship Android chipsets, such as Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and MediaTek Dimensity
9200, inherently support 200MP cameras. This support is not limited to high-end
chips but extends to mid-range chipsets like Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and Dimensity
1080.
However, the S23 Ultra
doesn't utilize any of the sensors mentioned above. Samsung unveiled a
brand-new sensor for its flagship smartphone of 2023, named ISOCELL HP2. This
200MP flagship sensor, specifically crafted for the S23 Ultra, features a
1/1.3" sensor with 0.6µm pixels, positioning it between the HP1 and HP3,
which have sensor sizes of 1/1.22" and 1/1.4", respectively. The new
sensor defaults to capturing 12.5MP photos with 16:1 pixel binning. Moreover,
it enables 8K recording at 30fps, an improvement from the 24fps on previous
generations.
The rest of the camera setup remains
largely the same, featuring two zoom lenses with 3X and 10X optical zoom,
respectively. Although initial leaks mentioned both telephoto cameras as 12MP,
they are officially listed as 10MP sensors.
Epic Night Photography
Utilizing a higher-megapixel
camera provides a significant advantage in enhancing digital zoom capabilities.
With a higher megapixel count, you can zoom into a specific part of the image
through cropping while still retaining remarkable details.
With the introduction of the
200MP ISOCELL HP2, Samsung claims a feature it dubs "Astro
Hyperlapse" for what it calls "Incredible Evening" photography.
This allows you to capture the night sky in motion with a new feature
integrated into the S23 Ultra.
Furthermore, the device
promises clearer and smoother nighttime videos, aided by Optical Image
Stabilization (OIS) and noise-reduction technology. Samsung has also made
improvements to its night portraits.
On a side note, the S23 Ultra
supports 8K video recording at 30 fps, an enhancement from the S22 Ultra, which
could only record 8K videos at 24 fps.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy
After facing criticism
regarding the performance of Exynos chips, Samsung has taken a decisive step by
exclusively incorporating Snapdragon chips in the new S23 series. According to
a Qualcomm representative well before the February Unpacked event, it was made
clear that the Galaxy S23 series would solely feature Snapdragon processors.
For the S23 Ultra, Samsung
utilizes an over-clocked version of the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip.
Notably, the "Prime" Arm Cortex-X3 core is clocked at a higher speed
of 3.36GHz, compared to the standard 3.2GHz. Similarly, the Adreno 740, based
on Immortalis, also boasts a higher clock speed of 719MHz on the S23 Ultra.
This version of the Snapdragon
8 Gen 2 chip is tailor-made specifically for Samsung's flagship, and as a
result, it carries the marketing label "Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
Mobile Platform for Galaxy."
Rest of the Specs
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
boasts a 6.8-inch AMOLED 2X display. It stands out as the primary model in the
series to showcase a QHD+ resolution of 3088 x 1440 pixels. Additionally, it
features an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 129Hz and an enhanced
Vision Booster setup. Furthermore, the device boasts a peak brightness of 1750
nits.
A notable feature is the
Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, making the S23 Ultra one of the first phones
to incorporate this safeguard. The phone is crafted with coated aluminum frames and holds an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
In terms of design, Samsung
has retained the familiar Shield Aluminum frames, maintaining the same design
and build as seen in the S22 Ultra.
