Samsung unveiled the complete
Galaxy S23 series, which includes the Standard, Plus, and Ultra models. Let's
delve into the official specifications and features of the Samsung Galaxy S23
series (S23 and S23 Plus).
Samsung Galaxy S23
Overview:
Design, Display
Samsung has given the Galaxy
S23 and S23 Plus a significant makeover, drawing inspiration from the S22
Ultra. The new flagship phones now feature separate camera bumps for each
camera lens, departing from the familiar Shape Cut camera design seen in the
Galaxy S21 and S22 models.
The primary qualification
between the Galaxy S23 and S23+ models lies in the screen size. The S23 boasts
a 6.1-inch display, while the Plus model sports a larger 6.6-inch screen.
Both the S23 and S23 Plus
come with Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays, supporting variable refresh rates ranging
from 48 to 120Hz. Both phones are HDR10+ certified and stand out as among the
first to feature Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. Additionally, Samsung has
increased the peak brightness on the S23 and S23 Plus to match the impressive
1750 nits found in the S23 Ultra.
Performance and Memory
This year, Samsung has
switched to using Snapdragon chips for its latest flagship phones, the Galaxy
S23 series, moving away from Exynos. The Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus, including the
Ultra variant, are now powered by a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. This marks the
beginning of a long-term partnership between Samsung and Qualcomm, which isn't
surprising given that Samsung was recently named the official smartphone
partner for the Snapdragon Star series e-sports association.
In terms of performance, the
new Galaxy variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip can achieve higher clock
speeds compared to the standard version. Qualcomm has managed to boost the Arm
Cortex-X3 "Prime" core up to 3.36 GHz, surpassing the 3.2 GHz limit
found in other phones using the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip.
The additional performance
and efficiency core clusters have maximum clock speeds of 2.8 GHz and 2.02 GHz,
respectively. Furthermore, the Adreno 740 GPU, based on Immortalis, is also
running at a higher frequency of 719 MHz, as opposed to the 680 MHz seen in
phones powered by the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip.
In the S23 series, Samsung
has incorporated the latest LPDDR5 technology for RAM and UFS 4.0 for storage.
However, the UFS 4.0 option is not available for the 128GB variants. The
standard Galaxy S23 comes in two memory configurations: 8GB of RAM with either
128GB or 256GB of storage. On the other hand, the S23 Plus model skips the
128GB option and offers a higher-capacity model with 512GB of storage.
Camera
As Samsung has reserved the
new 200MP ISOCELL HP2 sensor exclusively for the Ultra model, the rest of the
S23 series is equipped with a 50MP primary camera. The secondary cameras on the
S23 and S23 Plus consist of a 10MP telephoto camera and a 12MP ultrawide
camera.
While the hardware
configuration isn't drastically different from the S22/S22+, Samsung is making
up for it with software enhancements. The S23 series brings improvements to
Nightography, Night Selfie, and Night Selfie Video. Additionally, both phones
allow shooting in High Resolution, Pro Raw format, and feature the Photo
Remaster tool for adding finishing touches to captured photos.
When it comes to selfies, the
S23 and S23 Plus are rumored to feature a 12MP front camera, marking the first
resolution upgrade since the S10 in 2019.
Battery and Charging
Powering the Galaxy S23 is a
3900mAh battery that supports 25W fast charging. On the other hand, the S23+
comes with a larger 4,700mAh battery and offers even faster charging at 45W.
Both models also feature 10W wireless charging. Additionally, they will come
pre-installed with One UI 5.1 based on Android 13.
